Butternut Squash and Bacon Risotto

The cooling off period is here. Crisp evenings, dewy mornings and the crackle of fires and smoke filled air. Autumn is a season full of emotion for most people, scents, sounds, sights; they all conjure something different for everyone. My favourite part about autumn, besides the oversized sweaters, scarves and inevitable hallowe’en references is the food. Who can resist the last of the summer’s harvest and all the bounty of the return to heavier foods?

Here in the guiltiest of kitchens, we are finishing off our chicken coop (Only the fence and the chickens are needed to be 100% done!) and readying ourselves for the big birthday bash on Saturday. Look forward to a recipe for tiramisu no-bake cheesecake coming your way, it should be pretty good!

Today I present autumn on a plate. Simple, flavourful and full of all the things that comfort most on those drizzly cool evenings.

Salmon Burgers and Spinach Salad with Blackberry Vinaigrette

Today begins a countdown of sorts.

Today is four short days from my husbands 29th birthday. What seems like the birthday before the big birthday is really the birthday. This is the last year of the twenties, the last year that he can get away with being a young un, the last year of youth and vitality. After this, it’s all downhill….or is it?

In my opinion, we’re just getting started. Although I have a few more years before my own ascent into my “dirty” thirties, I know this is going to be the best decade yet. The next few years will see us decide on whether a third child is a good idea, plan out our extravagant trip through the US and Canada, buy property on which we will settle down, purchase a new vehicle, watch our children become little people, start school, make friends and will be the busiest, most enthralling years we’ve spent together so far.

Roasted Parsnip and Apple Soup

Sometimes people ask me what it’s like living so far away from the city. I’m not sure quite how to respond really. The first things that generally come to mind are that I can’t walk anywhere. There is nothing within five miles of my house besides the odd smattering of small cul-de-sacs filled with empty summer homes. By Labour Day three-quarters of the inhabitants of the lake we live on are gone, back to their “winter homes”. I do miss the obvious things like gourmet grocery stores, restaurants, access to clothing and shoe retailers at a minutes notice…you know, retail therapy.

Most of my days now are filled with taking care of the kids, walking amongst the semi-abandoned neighbourhoods (see creepy cabin above), epic loads of laundry on which I shamelessly throw myself when it comes hot out of the dryer (TMI?) and this:

Mushroom Masters – Shiitake Showdown!

Today is the first day of the Mushrooms Masters – A Tournament of Taste “Shiitake Showdown!”, a food blogging competition between the US, Canada and Australia. Bloggers from these countries have been recruited to create fantastic, mind blowing recipes to compete against the other nations in a side by side comparison, where you (the readers) get to vote for the winners! So far Canada has one winner and Australia another. Can we squeak out another win for Canada this week?

Ongoing until September 28th (September 27th is the last day to vote!), you can vote for your favourite recipe, your favourite country or even your favourite blogger! Just visit Tastespotting.com to vote for the winners or click the shortcut available in my left sidebar <——-

To see each of the recipes go to The Mushrooms Canada Blog or go directly to my recipe.

We have some great Canadian Foodies on our team so far: Kevin from Closet Cooking, Angela from Oh She Glows, and Jeannette from Everybody Likes Sandwiches so I’m super excited to be a part of the whole thing. My recipe for shiitake crusted pizza with steak and shiitakes, smothered in Gruyere cheese and loaded with all sorts of other goodies is up for voting today!

So get out there and vote for Canada!!

**Disclaimer: I have received compensation from Mushrooms Canada for my recipe and photos.

Scallops, Polenta and Tomato-Citrus Vinaigrette

Isla in Wonder
Wonder.

Your sense of wonder is so strong when you are so tiny. You gaze at the one holding you with such innocence in your eyes and smile with pure joy.

I wonder what it’s like to be such an empty slate. I know I was once, not so long ago, also in such a state, but my first memories consist of my older sister bouncing me by my head while I stood precariously in a doorway, mounted to a Jumperoo. Not the picture of innocence right?

When I look at my daughter I wonder what she thinks. What goes through her mind when I stare at her and am rewarded with coos and giggles? They are learning so much, so fast and in such short a span of time. It must be exciting and overwhelming and somewhat….tiring, I imagine. Which would explain the 10 hours of sleep I am so blissfully receiving each night. What once I thought the stuff of legends, myths and lying mothers trying to impress (zing!) actually does occur.

No matter the stuff going on behind the scenes, what I see before me every morning, afternoon and evening is a sight I will not tire of anytime soon. I could stare at this face all day.
