Spice Love: Chai

Lately it seems like all I’ve been talking about is how exhausting having kids is. How busy you are, how much time they consume, what and how they eat, what time they hit the pillow at night. Frankly, it’s exhausting hearing about it isn’t it?

I decided that I needed a little relaxation recently, as it was my birthday after all and my best friend works at a spa. What better excuse to get out of the house for a few hours alone and get pampered? So I did and I loved it and my toes are still shiny and red and the skin is so soft. I feel like it’s something everyone should do once a week, but of course, none of us have the time or the money.

Why is it so hard to get a minute to yourself?

Oh right, the kids.

Halibut Cakes

There’s just something about babies fresh from the bath. They smell good, their unholy, softer-than-soft-skin is still damp, their hair is all tousled and crazy and they are of course butt naked and innocent as can be. She looked like this for approximately 3.5 seconds (enough for a shutter click) before she started wailing in my face about being cold. Who could blame her. She’d been in the bath for about 35 minutes with her big brother while they both splashed incessantly, moving all the water from the tub to the bathmat, and I’d left the bathroom door open. Cold water + Cold air + Wet baby = screamfest.

It could be one of the reasons I am counting down the days to our big move. There is no working heater in our bathroom right now, never has been. It’s cold as hell when you get out of a ridiculously hot shower and I hate it. I cower in the stall and open the curtain a slit to reach out one arm and find the towel. I stay in there until I’m dry. I have a thing with being cold.

In any case, it is now only 17 days until our move. We have exactly three boxes packed. I blame my laziness, but also the poor acoustics of our home and the fact that Isla’s room is directly in the middle of the house, one floor up. We can’t do anything while she’s sleeping in fear of waking her, but we can’t do it while she is awake because our kids are attention whores. There’s just no pleasing anybody.

I’m hoping we can get this place packed up in the remaining weekends, but we shall see….

Guest Post at Indian Simmer: Poppyseed Lemon Cupcakes

I just realized, after a week, that I had not posted about my guest post over at Indian Simmer. What a bad guest poster I am!

I took a moment out of my ridiculously busy schedule to make some cupcakes and tell you all about them so that the lovely Prerna, of Indian Simmer, could pack up her bags and head over to the place of her birth (India) for a well deserved visit with family and friends. This is actually, if you can believe it, my very first guest post and I think I may have to do it again!

I hope you are having a wonderful time Prerna, and we’ll take care of all your fans for you while you’re gone!

There is also another new place you can read my thoughts now too. I have begun writing for the Stonyfield Canada Blog and will be a regular contributor over there. You all know how much I love to use yogurt in my recipes, but I also get to go on and on about all things west coast and organic, true passions for me. So come visit me over there, if you haven’t had enough of me here. My first post is for April Fool’s Day and sustainable fish, a curious combo…

So that is that for now folks. I’ve got a whole house to pack up and children to wrangle and birthday cake to work off my thighs. Toodle-oo!

Cranberry Walnut Muffins

I had a great weekend this past few days when we headed to the beach to set up a maternity shoot with one of my very first clients. I am so beyond excited about this new chapter in my life. It has been so hard to establish the business and to also keep tabs on my family life (being the main caregiver and all) and to also maintain my first blog baby, Guilty Kitchen.

One thing that has helped an awful lot in that transition is my very favourite new toy, the iPhone 4. As you can see in the photo above, we both got one, and we use it a lot. Adrian was posing for me to give me an idea of the lighting in this area, so I could set up the shot. A perfect time to catch up with Words with Friends” a Scrabble-like game app. Needless to say we are both smitten with our new techno toys.

The shoot went fabulous by the way, see more pics over at Garnett Wren Photography, my other blog.

While we were there I noticed this flower growing in amongst the thorns, so I snapped a quick shot. It reminded me to look around, because beauty really can be anywhere if you know what to look for.

Udon Pork Noodle Bowl

I had the great pleasure last weekend, of attending a local business opening. The place is called “The London Chef” and is owned and operated by the amazingly talented Dan Hayes and his equally wonderful wife, Micayla.

Having been involved the food industry in this town for almost 10 years, in one way or another, I am a bit embarrassed to admit that this was my first real social gathering with other foodies. Isn’t that sad? I guess I never harnessed the power of social media and networking quite as quick as everyone else.

Aside from my ineptitude at being a social maven, the party was grand! There was amazing food (although I apparently missed the dogfish and chips and am very sad about that), but I did get to taste some amazing pea soup shooters (with bacon!), absolutely droolworthy scallops served with their own roe and some fennel pernod cream sauce, and I also had some fantastic little toasts with caramelized onions (a classic).
