Until a few weeks ago, I had never made an angel food cake. Whaaaat? I know, right?
I have my own chickens, I love sweets, I can bake up a storm and I have never even attempted it. Why? Because to me, angel food cakes have always been the loafer of the cake world. Boring. Plain. Overused. The many times I’ve had it, it’s always been store bought, drenched in slimy store bought “glaze” or used as a base for sad out of season strawberries. A “healthy” dessert. Blah. Please, smother mine in three cups of whipped cream, some fresh raspberries and some shaved chocolate. Okay, now we’re talking. Oh, does that defeat the purpose of the whole egg white based cake thing? Yeah… so you see my dilemma.

I realized today that I have been so busy putting together our holiday eBook that I have yet to tell you about our stupendous trip to Santa Monica to attend the International Food Bloggers Conference, and also to take a little break from the kids. Did I mention how stressed out I’ve been lately? Did I mention that my heart beats irregularly and that my hair is falling out or that I can’t eat anything without feeling like crap or that I couldn’t sleep at all for days before the trip? Did I mention I’ve been to a naturopath to figure it all out?
Well, I can happily report that after a quiet, relaxing trip to Santa Monica, alone with my best friend and husband, my hair is growing back, my stomach troubles are gone, my heart beats like a normal person and I don’t scream at the kids every two minutes. Was a little trip all I needed to finally relax? The trip was the kickoff, but I also cut out caffeine and sugar (mostly). All these years caffeine has been turning me into the Hulk every morning. (LIZ SMASH!)

Hey all you crazy kids. Did you know I’ve been writing a book (an eBook, just to clarify)? Could you tell by the slow addition of any recipes here on the site? Sorry about that…I’ve been spending every available waking moment glued to my computer screen, tearing out my hair trying to bring you the best of the holiday recipes I have to offer. I stayed up late, I woke up early, we drank cocktails late into the night side by side, our faces glowing from the screens in front of us, and we finally finished it. Here it is: It features eleven mouth watering recipes. Which ones? Here’s list:
- Yule Nog
- Cafe con Dulce de Leche
- Caramelized Onion and Goat Cheese Flatbread
- Hot Crab Dip
- Brussels Sprouts au Gratin
- Sausage Stuffing
- Cranberry Sauce
- Italian Cauliflower Steaks
- Brined and Roasted Chicken or Turkey
- Salted Caramel Biscoff (Speculaas) Bars
- Chocolate, Blueberry and Hazelnut Shortbread
There you have it folks. Three weeks of day in and day out work. I hope you’ll love it as much as I do. To purchase an eBook, see the right side bar for payment options. And here, just for you, dear readers, is a little sneak peek at some of the photos:
So now I can officially start talking about the holidays right? American Thanksgiving is finally over, everyone and there dog has been out shopping like crazy for Black Friday, us Canadians are wrapped in every piece of clothing we own, bracing against the harsh winter we are seeing arrive, what better time to break out the shiny balls and hideous garlands?
Honestly, I feel like I am a little behind this year. Last year, we had most of our decorations up already and the tree went up on December 1st. This year, with two crazy toddlers, a busy blog and an upcoming book (details forthcoming….squeeee!) I haven’t even had time to put up window stickers. Seriously? I am usually one of those people that others roll their eyes at. Decorations up on November 1st? Most people are still struggling to figure out what to do with their half rotted Halloween pumpkins and tangled plastic spider webs.
What I have figured out already is the food. Natch.
I got a little push from my participation in the Canadian Tire Kitchen Crew Missions. I was sent the following message stuck to the side of a very large box:
“You’re having a holiday dinner party or gathering at your house, and you want a spread that’s going to really impress your friends or families with festive hors d’oeurvres or special holiday meals. Your mission this week is to craft a festive recipe for your holiday party spread!

I first heard about Bin 4 Burgers on Twitter a month or so prior to their opening. I have to say, the Twitter and Facebook campaign they are using is very modern and is thoroughly working. It has me talking the place up to people I know don’t even use Twitter (ahem*luddites*ahem) just to make sure they know all about it. The drawback to all of that cyber hype (with all the comments from people that had been there) is, needless to say, I had high expectations.
So on a Friday afternoon (with the two kids in tow), we decided to drive downtown at 11:30am to make sure we got a table for lunch. Surprisingly enough, we even got a parking spot! We arrived just as the doors opened and the front of house staff were waiting for us at the front desk with smiles on. Pretty good sign…
After walking in and checking out the lay of the land, we were led into the street front windowed section. Lots of natural light, perfect for photos. We started to pore over the menu with greedy, starving eyes. Shall we go for the veggie burger? Oh wait, there are two veggie burger options? And they are totally different? I have to say, this was a very pleasant surprise. Normally with one option (and a lowly, forgotten, bottom of the menu one at that), the vegetarian in us is left wanting. In this case, we were pleasantly surprised to have a couple of different options.
