Curried Pumpkin Stew

Have you ever seen someone out on the streets in your neighbourhood and wondered what their lives were like? Maybe you’ve seen them a few times before, each additional time you see them you feel like you are getting to know them. But you don’t know them, you are merely observing them in public. Sometimes this can be a very different beast then what people are like at home. People put on their good faces for public scrutiny, I know I do.

If it were up to me, I would never put makeup on again. Ever. Doing my hair every day is, to put it bluntly, a ridiculously intricate and complicated endeavour. Having long, curly, thick hair is a curse…a gorgeous one.

Canadian Tire Kitchen Crew Mission #3: Double Chocolate Chili Brownie Cookies

Seeing as the crisp fall weather has definitely made it’s way into our neck of the woods, it’s been a bit of a maelstrom of baking around here. There’s just something about cooler weather that makes me just want to wrap myself in layers of soft clothing, crank up the oven and just continuously bake every day. I don’t seem to have any argument from the peanut gallery, that’s for sure. So when I heard what my next mission would be in the Canadian Tire Kitchen Crew series (part III!), my mind started racing with the possibilities. Seriously, I now have a whole notepad sheet filled with ideas of crazy baking concoctions with “ethnic” flairs added. Here’s the deets:

“Baking’s sort of your thing, eh? This week your mission is to step out of your culinary comfort zone and bake treats inspired by other cultures! That means using at least one ethnic ingredient in your dish! Stem ginger, chili powder, you name it – the choice is yours! So what are you waiting for? Get baking!”

Kwagala Project – Beans and Posho

Today I am sharing a post by someone I have never met but wish that I could stand beside. Kelsey, director of Kwagala Project out of Uganda, contacted me a few weeks ago asking if I could help spread the word about her work. What else could I say but yes? The people of Africa, so long in suffering at the hands of their own people and us as well, deserve all the help they can get. If I, a single person with only my website to offer, can help this project, than I will do anything in my power to do so.

Food brings us together in so many ways, but sharing the diverse ethnic foods of other countries is one of my biggest passions. I love to see what the rest of the world eats and I want to try all of it! Seeing the simple meals that these girls make for each other every single day made me smile. I can see them working together each evening to make this and serving it to each other and gathering to eat as a group. Standing in solidarity together as they continue to heal together.

Roasted Squash and Corn Salad

Today, on day two of a seven week cleanse (more on this later)….I bring you this lovely fall salad. Filled with the fresh tastes of the waning harvest, this salad is a perfect way to use up those little niggling bits and pieces hanging out in your fridge. Last zucchini, last corn and the newly arrived armloads of squash.

In reality, I’d love to bring you my cleanse meals, but they are nothing short of boring. I think I will post some photos later as I know there are people out there (much like me) who are desperately searching for recipes to eat on their detox or cleanse. It is nigh impossible to find anything! It also greatly depends on the type of cleanse you are doing. Ours, a brand called ReCleanse, claims to be a full body detoxification.

Pear and Apple Spice Bread

We have two pear trees in our backyard. And two apple trees. This makes for a lot of fruit that is either falling on the ground ready to be eaten immediately or fruit that hangs precariously at eye level, teasing us with it’s ridiculously long ripening times.

The pears are everywhere, I can’t keep up. The two trees are huge and sit side by side like Roman giants. There is a weird blight on all the pears, though they are still perfectly edible. It does make them more susceptible to damage from the wandering wasps and slugs. The apples are what we really want….the two trees combined will never fulfill our apple desires. We’re totally an apple kind of family.
