It’s Christmas time and that means a lot of things to a lot of people. Time to self reflect, to pray, to worship, to love, to give, to sing, to cook and bake, to be with family, to share, to shop and to party. All these things are valid to certain people and I wouldn’t argue against any particular point. I just love this time of year and I like to do it differently every now and then. Mostly there are always the same little things, a tree, some garlands, a turkey, some presents. But sometimes we do it at our place, or the in-laws. One year we went out for dinner at a super fancy restaurant, all dressed up in our finest and ate someone else’s cooking. This year we’ll sit at home together, just us, our little family. Then maybe we’ll meander to the in-laws for some more wine and stocking unwrapping.
One thing that has always remained the same though, is my love to share my cooking and baking with my family and friends. Every year I spend inordinate amounts of time baking, cooking, wrapping, ribboning, boxing, labeling and sending things. This year I decided not to. What I thought was a great way to save money and give a little homemade love turned into an all out three day baking fest, layering the household in a fine dusting of flour and leaving me sore, tired and a little put off. This year a simple card and a family portrait will be the gift we give. I also did some non-baking this year.

Today I’m exhausted.
I felt like looking at this gorgeous summer shot of the sun. Why? Well, because I haven’t seen it in a few weeks. I thought it might perk me up a bit. I think it’s working.
December is here and that means a lot of busy weekends, exhausting work days and shopping and decorating until I can’t take it anymore. Wanna see proof?
Ahhhhhh!! That’s our living room after hours of digging through boxes (more than I remember) of last year’s Christmas decorations. Apparently we made out like bandits during after Christmas sales and this year there was even more to find room for in our Great Room.
On top of all the Christmas hoopla, little Isla (remember our wee baby?) is just in that first stage of crawling and almost ready to start solid foods. Needless to say we’re losing some sleep at night and precious energy during the day running after her. Not to mention that I’ve also committed myself to an insane (literally!) workout regimen each morning. It’s called, wait for it…Insanity. I am dripping with sweat by the end of it and I love it, but it does zap my energy a bit.

I have a confession. I have a magazine subscription addiction.
I have another confession. None of them are food related.
Shocking I know. I just don’t have the time to be writing about food, photographing food, cooking food, and also reading about food. I like to blaze my own path when it comes to food literature. Also the Internet is an amazing source of free food goodies. Anything you could possibly dream up (merlot flour? Maggot riddled cheese?! Coffee that’s been pre-digested by a cat??!!) is available for oogling on the Internet.
There is so much to do, see and learn about food wise, on the Internet that I just can’t bring myself to pay for another subscription that I will feel obligated to read. As you can see by the pile above, I am a little behind in my reading as it is. Yes, every one of those (save the top edition) is unread.
(What? I HAD to read about Kate and William! All 52 ridiculous pages of it, actually…)
When it comes to finding time to actually sit down and read something, I can’t say I’m leading the charge. How does one go about caring for two young children while also sitting down for a quiet read? Right. It just doesn’t happen. The time left for me in the day comes down to when I brush, floss, take pills, and head off to bed. I’m lucky if I make it all the way up the stairs and under the covers before someone wakes up and needs their mommy.
