Q: Who are you?
A: Who me? My name is Elizabeth. I’m 31 years old. I live in a small hamlet just outside of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. I am a twice published cookbook author, a freelance writer and a photographer. I grew up in Campbell River, BC., just 4 hours North of where I live now. I was the fat kid in high school, but I sure showed them! I have been married to my best friend for seven years and we have two children, a son and a daughter. I have one sister and my parents are still married (30+ years!).
Q: What makes you such an expert? What kind of culinary training do you have?
A: I am by no means an expert. My culinary training consists of a Cook’s Training class in High school followed by 7 years of on the job training in various styles of restaurants, from pubs, gastro pubs, gourmet catering, diner, 5 star dining and Thai. Since then I’ve just kept myself up to date with the newest techniques and styles.
Q: What kind of camera do you use?
A: I use a Nikon D90. I have two lenses, an AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 G and a 35mm f/1.8G. I do have an off camera flash module (SB600) but I don’t use it for food photos. For that, I have a Cowboy Studios lighting set up.
Q: I have a question regarding a recipe.
A: Great! I love those! Leave a comment on the recipe’s page or feel free to e-mail me if you have more pressing concerns like I left out the baking powder in Baking Powder Biscuits or something equally ridiculous.
Q: I love your site/pictures/recipes, etc. Can I use them on my site?
A: I love flattery, it will get you everywhere. All I ask is that you give credit where it is due and also, please link back to me! Thanks!
Q: Your recipe for ______ looks just like ________’s Recipe from _____ cookbook!
A: Oh no! I hate when that happens. But at the same time, it thrills me to think that I came up with something similar to some other published chef! Wow! I swear I didn’t steal it, and I didn’t know that they had a recipe similar. If I do adapt a recipe, all precautions are taken to link back to the original author or make a notation under the recipe title to tell you where I adapted it from. I have a grand total of 7 cook books in my house and they’ll be lucky if they ever see the light of day. I cook by the seat of my pants and don’t rely on cookbooks, except my own.
Q: How do you pick what you eat every week/How do you organize your shopping?
A: Every Friday, my husband and I sit down and plan out the next week’s meals. As we are on a single income, making sure we have little to no food waste is very important. We plan out each day’s dinners and buy according to the list we create from the menu. We buy local, organic and in season foods as often as possible, which helps with the cost and adds to the health benefits. Our little guy really likes smoothies, so bananas are always on the list, but we do try! Lunches are always the same so those items never change, and neither does coffee, cream and baking supplies. We shop every Saturday at our local community Farmer’s Markets, Meat Markets and grocery stores.
Q: What do your kids eat?
A: we eat a Paleo diet and our kids do too….most of the time. We add in some gluten free noodles, sprouted grain breads and typical kid snacks to make them happy.
Q: I can’t find a recipe for ______, help!
A: There is a search box on the top right hand of the page, or try my Recipe Page.
Q: You’ve shown pictures of your dog before, what kind of dog is it?
A: That’s Domino, he is a Puggle. A Puggle is a Pug and a Beagle. If you have lots of patience and a large house with a big back yard and neighbours are nowhere to be seen, go ahead and get one yourself. We also own a rescued pitty/lab cross, Harlow.
That’s it for now. You still have more questions? E-mail me and I will add to this list:
