Canadian Tire Kitchen Crew Christmas Edition – Mission #2 Vegetable Lasagna

So now I can officially start talking about the holidays right? American Thanksgiving is finally over, everyone and there dog has been out shopping like crazy for Black Friday, us Canadians are wrapped in every piece of clothing we own, bracing against the harsh winter we are seeing arrive, what better time to break out the shiny balls and hideous garlands?

Honestly, I feel like I am a little behind this year. Last year, we had most of our decorations up already and the tree went up on December 1st. This year, with two crazy toddlers, a busy blog and an upcoming book (details forthcoming….squeeee!) I haven’t even had time to put up window stickers. Seriously? I am usually one of those people that others roll their eyes at. Decorations up on November 1st? Most people are still struggling to figure out what to do with their half rotted Halloween pumpkins and tangled plastic spider webs.

What I have figured out already is the food. Natch.

I got a little push from my participation in the Canadian Tire Kitchen Crew Missions. I was sent the following message stuck to the side of a very large box:

”You’re having a holiday dinner party or gathering at your house, and you want a spread that’s going to really impress your friends or families with festive hors d’oeurvres or special holiday meals. Your mission this week is to craft a festive recipe for your holiday party spread!

Restaurant Review: Bin 4 Burger Lounge

I first heard about Bin 4 Burgers on Twitter a month or so prior to their opening. I have to say, the Twitter and Facebook campaign they are using is very modern and is thoroughly working. It has me talking the place up to people I know don’t even use Twitter (ahem*luddites*ahem) just to make sure they  know all about it. The drawback to all of that cyber hype (with all the comments from people that had been there) is, needless to say, I had high expectations.

So on a Friday afternoon (with the two kids in tow), we decided to drive downtown at 11:30am to make sure we got a table for lunch. Surprisingly enough, we even got a parking spot!  We arrived just as the doors opened and the front of house staff were waiting for us at the front desk with smiles on. Pretty good sign…

After walking in and checking out the lay of the land, we were led into the street front windowed section. Lots of natural light, perfect for photos. We started to pore over the menu with greedy, starving eyes. Shall we go for the veggie burger? Oh wait, there are two veggie burger options? And they are totally different? I have to say, this was a very pleasant surprise. Normally with one option (and a lowly, forgotten, bottom of the menu one at that), the vegetarian in us is left wanting. In this case, we were pleasantly surprised to have a couple of different options.

Toor Lentil Curry

Introducing….Adrian

It has been too long. I have gone too long without being more than a bit player in Guiltykitchen.com. I have watched my lovely wife build Guilty Kitchen from nothing to thousands of hits per month, thousands of followers on Twitter and hundreds of fans on Facebook. She works tirelessly every day and nightto bring you, our kind readers, food and photography of all kinds.

But enough about Elizabeth. This post is introducing me! Ha!

I was born and raised in northern British Columbia in a small town called Terrace (population: about 10,000 people). By north, I mean so far north that in the summer the sun only sets for a short period of time. I was far away from anything resembling “foodie” food and it was never a thought in my mind. Good food was bought from “Subway” by money my sister gave me. McDonald’s was the place to work and Tim Horton’s had 3, yes, 3 locations to serve the small population. I still remember the day that a 7-11 opened for the first time. WOW! 7-11 in Terrace! We had finally made it as a town.

Canadian Tire Kitchen Crew Holiday Edition – Mission #1 Liege Waffles

Heading into the depths of winter and the end of daylight saving time is my most loathed part of the year and also my most loved. How can that be you ask? I love the holidays. From the minute the clock strikes midnight on November 1st, as I head to bed with a sure-to-be sugar hangover from all the Halloween candy, I am in holiday mode. I am one of “those” people.

Slowly, the boxes of decorations meander their way into the house as the days go on. First a reindeer here, a little carved wooden sign that reads “snow” covered in snowmen, little stuffed Santas, a wreath, candles, shiny balls, garlands, wooden trees adorned in bells…they all slowly creep their way into the house. The line the walls, the window sills, the tops of every available surface and they stay there for eight weeks straight.

As the weeks slowly creep on, my mind wanders towards the baking, the music, the lights. Every aspect of holiday attitude becomes my day to day reality. My children’s eyes sparkle with the twinkle of hundreds of Christmas lights strewn on the ceiling high above. This is my time.
