Creamy Peanut Butter Pie – A Pie For Mikey

Today is not my usual post.

I often don’t speak of the community that is involved in food blogging, but there is quite a number of people involved in it. There are hundreds, nay, thousands of people who consider themselves food bloggers. Often they come together for conferences, or get togethers, picnics, meetings, coffee, just because. There is a warm outreach that you can feel across many a social network.

I have never been to one of these get togethers, but I’ve been there in spirit more times then I care to count. I have participated in Twitter streams during events, just trying to be a part of this community, for sometimes one can feel left out.

This past weekend, one of my fellow food bloggers, Jennie of In Jennie’s Kitchen, lost her husband, Mikey,  to a sudden and massive heart attack. Details aren’t clear, but what is clear is that this was a terrible, tragic event. Jennie is the mother of two small children and a wonderful writer. I have had the opportunity to chat with her online and we have both linked to each other in our posts.

{Guest Post: Jaclyn from Food + Words) Late Summer Raspberry Cake

Today we welcome Jaclyn from the beautiful blog, Food + Words. A fellow soulful writer like me, Jaclyn writes full stories and heartfelt feelings before every delicious recipe, giving you a glimpse into her life. What is food without a gathering around a table filled with small talk, deep conversations or complicated silences? Food is something to be shared, and words are the perfect accompaniment. Naturally, a name like Food + Words fits beautifully into the Food Blogging world.

We were very happy that Jaclyn was a willing participant in my “holiday” from blogging. So thank you Jaclyn! Enjoy this gorgeous recipe for Raspberry Cake!

Whole Wheat Chocolate Cherry Muffins

Although most of the technical season called “summer” did not arrive here in the Pacific Northwest this year, the cooler weather did not deter our favourite fruits and vegetables from growing just as well. They may have been a tad late (three weeks in some cases), but those of us who were in the know kept waiting with bated breath. As long as it doesn’t rain everyday and no frost befalls us, those fruits will be here.

And the waiting paid off. Although we didn’t make it to the Okanagan this year (as in years past), Adrian’s parents made the journey with us at top of mind. Upon their return, we were greeted with 20 lbs. of beautiful black Lapin cherries, 10 lbs. of succulent yellow peaches and 20 lbs. of sweet, juicy apricots. It was a fruit lovers dream. If I were anyone else, I may have pulled out the canning supplies and stored some for next year. But you know what we did? We ate it. All of it. While it was still fresh. In a week. It was glorious. Our timing was aided by some Clearly Fresh Bag samples I had received a few weeks ago, and I’m very happy about that. Without the bags, I may have had to do something drastic, like preserve.

{Guest Post: Shellina from The Frugal Flambe} Fresh Garden Bruschetta

Todays’ post comes to us from Shellina of The Frugal Flambe. Shellina is a wife, mom and blogger from Minneapolis, Minnesota. She writes for her own food blog devoted to educating families on the emotional and financial benefits of eating at home- The Frugal Flambe. With a new recipe or tip every day, it’s your one-stop-read for encouragement and ideas for feeding your family on a dime.

Summer: a time for relaxing, enjoying late sunshine, eating outside, playing outside, and maybe even sleeping outside, the warm days and (hopefully) cooler nights, the laid back feeling of it all. What’s not to love about summer? Well, here in Minnesota, a lot. There’s the mosquitoes, the humidity, the constant road construction, the hot nights and the hotter days, and this year- the peak of my second pregnancy (baby is due mid-August). It’s enough to make one wish for winter. But even I, the Grinch of summertime, have found the silver lining in two beautiful aspects of this time of year. Okay, there are three beautiful aspects:

  1. Planting my own vegetable garden.
  2. Eating my own veggies from said vegetable garden.
  3. Air conditioning… but that has nothing to do with this post.

If you’ve been tending your own vegetable garden this year, exciting times are here at last! That’s right, ladies and gentlemen- the fruits of your labor are beginning to ripen, (or have ripened already), and soon your kitchen will be overflowing with possibilities and supper ideas.

Early August is prime picking season for one of the most versatile veggies coming from your garden: the tomato. (Okay, okay, it’s a fruit- a fact I never understood, but I trust nonetheless.) Whether you planted those puppies in March or early May, odds are that they’ll start turning that gorgeous red within the first two weeks of August. It’s time to bring in your harvest and begin planning some meals around them, because they won’t stay gorgeous forever. Of course, there’s canning, but why not enjoy some of them fresh? That’s the best part, right? Right.
