Time is moving quickly in our house, as every parent knows it does and it’s not slowing down any time soon.
The kids often play together on the floor while I keep a watchful eye from the kitchen. How they once stood apart from one another staring only with an uncaring eye, they now show interest and even enjoyment. I can even leave them alone (under supervision!) for short periods of time and giggle at how they “play”.
I know I will miss this time when they start doing homework, refusing to kiss me goodnight and bringing home girlfriends and boyfriends, but I can’t help but want them both to be a little older. I can’t wait for all the exciting things we are going to do and be a part of when they are both old enough to walk and talk. Oh, the places we will go, the food we will eat! I’m excited at the prospect of the future, but am trying to live in the present. It’s hard to enjoy each and every day as it comes when you are elbow deep in piles of dirty cloth diapers, unfolded laundry, grocery bags to unpack and the like, but I am doing my best. Every time I gaze into my kid’s eyes and see their innocent little faces, I know I have to enjoy it all. I pause as often as my life allows.

The cooling off period is here. Crisp evenings, dewy mornings and the crackle of fires and smoke filled air. Autumn is a season full of emotion for most people, scents, sounds, sights; they all conjure something different for everyone. My favourite part about autumn, besides the oversized sweaters, scarves and inevitable hallowe’en references is the food. Who can resist the last of the summer’s harvest and all the bounty of the return to heavier foods?
Here in the guiltiest of kitchens, we are finishing off our chicken coop (Only the fence and the chickens are needed to be 100% done!) and readying ourselves for the big birthday bash on Saturday. Look forward to a recipe for tiramisu no-bake cheesecake coming your way, it should be pretty good!
Today I present autumn on a plate. Simple, flavourful and full of all the things that comfort most on those drizzly cool evenings.

Today begins a countdown of sorts.
Today is four short days from my husbands 29th birthday. What seems like the birthday before the big birthday is really the birthday. This is the last year of the twenties, the last year that he can get away with being a young un, the last year of youth and vitality. After this, it’s all downhill….or is it?
In my opinion, we’re just getting started. Although I have a few more years before my own ascent into my “dirty” thirties, I know this is going to be the best decade yet. The next few years will see us decide on whether a third child is a good idea, plan out our extravagant trip through the US and Canada, buy property on which we will settle down, purchase a new vehicle, watch our children become little people, start school, make friends and will be the busiest, most enthralling years we’ve spent together so far.
